Our Services
Helping to keep your eyes healthy and your vision clear is an important part of your exam.
To accomplish this there are two basic parts to expect in your annual exam.
The first part is the "Refraction"* which is a test performed by the doctor to determine your eyeglass prescription. This helps keep you seeing clearly!
*(For most insurances this test is included in the cost of the exam, however for Medicare patients this part of the exam is not covered by Medicare, as it is deemed medically unnecessary. Therefore, Medicare patients will see a small charge in their exam fee that will be due at the time of service.)
The second part is the "dilation" process. This test is done during the exam and causes your pupils to dilate. Dilating your pupils allows more light into your eye, giving the doctor a better view of the back of your eye. This test is important because it helps the doctor identify and also monitor stages of Diabetes, Macular degeneration, Retinal detachment, and Glaucoma. If you are sensitive to dilation, please see the information below in the exam alternative section. This is an alternative to dilation, at an additional nominal charge.
As you can see both of these basic tests are important to your comprehensive eye health. You can do your part by being aware of these tests, and their benefits - and we will do ours, because keeping your eyes healthy is our #1 goal!

Alternative to Dilation:
During a comprehensive eye exam Dr. Cote monitors for retinal complications including macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal holes or detachments. We now offer optomap technology to detect these conditions.
This screening procedure can also detect medical problems, (unrelated to the eye) that may produce early warning signs in the eye such as hypertension, cancer, and auto-immune disorders, tumors, and others.
The optomap® Retinal Exam:
Its as fast as taking a picture, DOES NOT REQUIRE DILATING DROPS, and Will be saved in your file, enabling your optometrist to make important comparisons during your annual eye exam
Dr. Cote prefers to take this photo on every patient once a year. she will discuss with you during your visit if this replaces your need for additional dilating drops.
The out of pocket fee for this test is $39. In the event we are able to bill your insurance, we will waive the fee for your visit.
